Tucked away less than 30 minutes from the bustle of Sydney Airport, the collection of Bate Bay beaches feel like they still haven't been impacted too heavily by the changing face of the Harbour City, being less developed as some of its more hectic counterparts.

“As planes descend into Mascot overhead, the coastline below opens out into Sydney's longest, least crowded and most beautiful stretch of sand — an instant reset for anyone arriving and looking to shake off the jet lag. Bate Bay rarely tops the overtly cliché bucket lists, yet it quietly offers just about everything a savvy beachgoer could want. This is Gweagal Country, part of the sprawling Dharawal Nation, and the area holds deep cultural significance as the site of the first recorded encounter between Australian Aboriginal people and Europeans in 1770. Many beaches here carry Dharug names — Gunamatta, Wanda, Flouera and Cronulla — meaning "place of pine seashells". The bay itself is a compact collection of 10 beautifully maintained, family-friendly beaches and four ocean baths, framed by two extraordinary national parks. There are more than 20 accessible beaches within the Shire and across the waters south. It is also one of Sydney's most accessible coastal regions, with the city's only direct train line to a surf beach and free beachside parking — a rarity this close to the CBD. What really sets Bate Bay apart is variety. There are sprawling, open surf beaches like Greenhills — at 4.8 kilometres, Sydney's longest and of Puberty Blues fame, alongside sheltered ocean pools carved around the sandstone at the urban southerned. Gunamatta Park's tidal baths offer calm water and shaded grass areas, while the newly opened and fully accessible clifftop walk around Hungry Point delivers sweeping views across Port Hacking to Bundeena and pristine ribbon beach. Locals are already calling it one of the best coastal walks in the country. A local ferry runs from Cronulla Wharf to the pier of historic Bundeena. Beyond the sand, the Subtropical Shire has embraced, welcoming forest effects its quintessentially Australian beaches and genuine connection to the ocean. Lifeguards on duty at lifesaving clubs keep beachgoers safe year-round, while community programs educate newcomers and tourists on staying safe while in the ocean. Alfresco beachside cafes and fine dining options lend a cosmopolitan atmosphere with fresh ocean breezes. When the swell is on Bate Bay comes alive. Recognised as an iconic National Surfing Reserve in 2008, the area has a rich surf history and some of Sydney's most phenomenal breaks. Sydney overall has the finest beaches of any Australian capital. Its beaches (40 around the Harbour and another 60 scattered) and of course there are beaches galore to the north, south, east and now, west to the newly developed river beaches, like Pondi. Over time, a friendly rivalry has grown between coastal regions.
