Often cited as the Sunshine State’s most beautiful and one of its safest beaches, there’s no disputing that this long sandy stretch is worthy of travel plans for families and digital nomads.
While Cylinder is nestled comfortably among the favourable northern hub of North Straddie, either with a 4WD or by day charter, the long full length of the island is 38kms, ensuring everyone will find their own patch of an empty wave-lashed sunlit paradise. At its widest, it’s 11kms. Reached by regular and affordable vehicular (45mins) and passenger (25mins) ferries leaving from Cleveland 365 days, landing at Dunwich. While Cylinder may be the most popular beach on the island, there’s plenty of others around, but are not necessarily patrolled and swimmers must carefully read the rips and gutters to avoid getting caught out. These spots are best for experienced surfers and fisherfolk. The northern sun-drenched side of Straddie near the ever-growing settlement of Point Lookout, offers low to moderate swells and this 500m long beach is considered best positioned to all amenities and sighting of kangaroos on the hill. First Nations peoples had first contact here with new settlers in 1803 (only 120 years ago) when they helped shipwrecked sailors find fresh water. North Straddie is a must see, must do experience for anyone who thirsts for an island getaway. Best of all, this island jewel is right on doorstep of Queensland’s bustling Brisbane, soon to be an Olympic host.
