Just across the water from the southern shore of K'gari (Fraser Island), Inskin Point is straightforward and unpretentious.
It's a narrow spit of shimmering sand edged by she-oaks and cypress pines, with enough space to spread out and have a quiet spot of your own. The western side has the water is calm and shallow, well suited to fishing and small boats. The eastern beach faces the open Cooloola Coast, where strong rips and shifting conditions make swimming unsafe. Inskin is about 10 kilometres north of Rainbow Beach, the coloured-sands township at the northern end of the Great Sandy National Park and is easily reached by road. Open and largely undeveloped, Inskin is best known as the walk-in spot and gateway for 4WDs arrive and line up along the shore, drivers checking tide times before boarding the daily vehicle barge. Many people choose not to rush. Come stay for several days — up to the 19-day limit — camping in tents or vans and resupplying in Rainbow Beach, where there are shops, fuel and a Surf Life Saving Club. Camping is spread across a number of basic, but beautiful sites with facilities such as toilets and waste stations. Visitors are expected to camp responsibly and respect both the environment and those around them. The area is considered geologically unstable with landslips and sinkholes not uncommon. The area isn't suitable for people with access needs, but it is dog-friendly, provided pets are kept securely leashed. Camping permits must be booked online in advance, particularly during busy holiday periods. If conditions deteriorate or you're after more comfort, accommodation is available nearby at Tin Can Bay - an easy drive away - or back at Rainbow Beach. Please note be dingo, shark and croc wise in these parts.
