World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island with its towering, densely forested mountains fringed by picture perfect beaches and a pristine coral reef, has been called the ‘Hawaii’ of Australia, visually at least.
But here in Australia, unlike Hawaii, it is supremely peaceful, personalised and guaranteed uncrowded. Under 2hrs flight from Sydney, Port Macquarie and the Gold Coast. Visitor numbers are limited to 400 at any one time, roughly the population of residents. Lord Howe was discovered in 1788 and settled formally in 1834 by the British out of mainland Australia. There are 15 recognised beaches scattered – all superb; but Lagoon Beach is the calmest, largest and most picturesque and is viewed in its entirety from the majestic Mt Gower which stands at 875m (known as ‘Australia’s best day trek’). Of Australia’s 8,222 islands, Lord Howe has become iconic as a holiday destination for generations of discerning eco-adventurers and deservedly continues to attract international attention largely for its untouched natural environment. This island is a showcase for sustainable tourism. With no mobile phone reception system, Lord Howe is the complete destination to switch off and immerse yourself in nature. An irresistible escape from the modern world with many standout iconic features, such as the worlds’ most southern coral reef system (lining the lagoon) and of note, the world’s tallest volcanic sea stack – which is only an adventurous boat ride away. Deep sea fishing (cook that night), Honorary membership golf, relaxed beachcombing, kayaking, snorkelling and lazing in the sun are high on most visitor’s bucket list, along with exploring the many natural hiking trails of various grades, some of which wind through kentia palm forests to reveal the most breathtaking views in Australia. Some of its accommodation is also world class.
