For accessibility to the water, this South Australian delight on the fabulous Limestone Coast allows you to drive your 2WD car right up to the calm waters edge with its tightly packed fine sand and tidal characteristics.
Long Beach on Guichen Bay is a gently curved wide beach, with rock reefs fringing the bay to keep waves low along the shoreline, producing wide, soft waves. The shelter provided by the bay led to the establishment of the nearby central port of Robe in 1847, once one of the busiest in Australia for wool export and these days quality crayfish much for export, and many of its iconic historic stone buildings and houses date from the 1840s. Cafes and coffee, craft beer, limestone coast wines (5 cellar doors) and sumptuous fare is on offer regionally. And just how long is long beach - 12 kms, but SA is the home of much longer beaches for the west bound explorer. A scenic 4-hour drive from Adelaide and 6hrs from Melbourne. Officially, the beach is a designated road with a speed of 25-40kmph, so please do respect locally enforced beach safety rules. There is a car free section if you prefer, just follow signage. Other Robe beaches I’d recommend are Hoopers and Town Beach, location of the Visitors Centre and a free beach wheelchair. Beachport Beach is 30 mins away on the Melbourne bound road running behind three curious beachside lakes. 4WD Little Dip Conservation Park is also close, drive with care. For the elderly, infants, those with accessibility needs, waders and cautious swimmers, Long Beach is ideal to reach the beach without carparking hassles.
