For a village of only a couple of hundred residents, historic Smoky Bay punches well above its weight.
This small Eyre Peninsula settlement offers an unlikely mix of attractions, including an 18-hole golf course with a community club, a substantial town jetty, famously plump oysters, and easy access to some of the most naturally remote coastline in South Australia. Fresh seafood is part of everyday life here and, if you strike up a conversation, you might find yourself buying oysters at mates' rates straight from the source. Smoky Bay isn't close to Adelaide — it's a long, steady drive west — but for travellers who value space, quiet and open horizons, the journey is part of the appeal. Beaches here come with a generous serving of salty solitude. Exploring beyond town can be especially rewarding, even along unsealed or unmarked roads, particularly around Coffin Bay and Point Brown headland. Low tide reveals rock pools, while sheltered gaps offer safe swimming, productive fishing and off-grid camping options for those properly equipped. Nearby Denial Bay, just west of Ceduna, is worth a look, while to the south lie Whistling Rocks and the well-known surf breaks around Streaky Bay. As always on this stretch of coast, caution is advised: seals haul out along nearby shores, and where seals gather, large sharks are known to patrol. For peace of mind, Smoky Bay has a shark-free swimming enclosure located just off the town jetty. Like many Australian coastal settlements, Smoky Bay was named by early navigators — here by the smoke seen rising from Aboriginal fires. The original First Nations name, Wallanippie, referenced a nearby waterhole, though the European name endured through its years as a working port. A visit to the local oyster farms is highly recommended, ideally paired with a glass of South Australia's celebrated cool-climate white wine.
